KEMPELE ECOVILLAGE - 100% independent heat and power

The Finnish Association of Civil Engineers (RIL) selected the ecovillage as the most significant Finnish construction project of the year 2010. The village is Finland's first housing estate that is self-sufficient in terms of energy and off the national grid.

The ecovillage has been a product development platform for Volter technology. The community’s CHP-plant produces electricity and heat for ten houses. The office and product development premises of the company are also situated in the ecovillage. Completed in spring 2009.

CONTAINER CHP-PLANT, KEMPELE

The container power plant is a CHP-plant operating independently of the national grid and produces electricity and heat from wood chips for a large house and a small machine workshop. Surplus electricity is fed to the grid of Oulun Seudun Sähkö.

The container power plant also has a new type of local heat grid as well as a drying terminal for wood chips. The built area is 125m², of which the dryer takes up 34m² and the fuel storage 36m². Completed in spring 2011.

CHP-PLANT, OULU

The plant operating independently of the national grid produces electricity and heat for a house built in 1906, a leisure center as well as garage and storage buildings.  Surplus electricity is fed into the grid of Oulun Energia. An intelligent electricity network has been implemented at the site that monitors energy consumption and adjusts the power of the production plant according to the desired operation mode.

A new kind of local heat grid, emission monitoring, realXtend virtual world -connection and a charge station for an electric car. Built area 54m², of which the fuel storage takes up 20m². The CHP-plant was handed over to the customer in November 2011. A battery package was added in the end of 2012, which allows the plant to function as an independent off-grid island.
